"It's a Bermudaful day! ~ Exploring Bermuda

“It’s a Bermudaful day!”

Visiting Bermuda!? Or considering a trip here!?... It is simply wonderful!

From the genuine warmth of the Bermudian people, to the glistening turquoise sea. It is hard to capture this beautiful country in words alone…

The island exudes such beauty, as you meander through the roads you will see the white corrugated roofs and picturesque pastel-coloured buildings amidst the palms… it is simply stunning!

I stayed in 2 areas on the island, the first was on Bermuda’s stunning south shore… lined with the famous pink sand beaches and coconut palms. The second was close to the capital Hamilton, near to the breath-taking blue waters and the Harbour.

Things to do in Bermuda~

There are countless things to experience in Bermuda… accessing any part of the island is simple using the bus transport. A short journey is $5 or you can get both day and week passes which are more cost effective.

Or if you fancy something a little different, that gives you the freedom to stop at many of the picture spots on the island, you can hire the electric (Twizzy) cars… a unique and green way to explore!

My favourite moments in Bermuda:

Are you a beach lover!? If so Bermuda will have the beach for you! The country boasts turquoise waters, beautiful white and ‘pink’ sand beaches and romantic coves.

A visit to the pink sand beaches along the south shore of the island is a must! I loved Horseshoe Bay Beach, one of the most iconic beaches in Bermuda…the beach exudes beauty and I was told by the locals that throughout the year many events take place here, due to its prime location and calm waters. However if you’re looking for the less popular, little hidden gem beaches, just beyond Horseshoe Bay is Jobson’s Cove Beach, a stunning and romantic location, just hidden away.

Cooper’s Bay, in St George’s Parish, is another hidden gem location with such beautiful shores. Not forgetting Bermuda’s longest beach Warwick Long Bay, with its outstretched golden sand… when the waters are calm, snorkeling here is incredible, with schools of brightly coloured fish gliding past you… this untamed beach is simply idyllic!

The Bermuda Railway Trail was really enjoyable too!

Are you into walking and exploring!? The trail is 18 miles long with no shortage of natural wonders and scenic views! Spanning the island from St George’s Station in the East, to Somerset Station in the West! The trail follows the abandoned rail bed of the traditional Bermuda Railway and is definitely worth experiencing!

Hidden Gem experience~

Bermuda has an indescribable warmth…strolling around the streets of Hamilton to meandering along the fine sandy beaches… I met and had lovely chats with the friendliest and most genuine people. There is a definite sense of community in this beautiful place.

I took the 25 minute bus journey from Hamilton to the magnificent Crystal Caves, using route 10 and 11. From here the caves are easily located and sign-posted.

As you walk down the deep entrance to the caves, their sheer beauty is revealed. They were utterly breathtaking.

The story behind the Crystal Cave’s discovery is simply enchanting... back in 1905 2 young boys playing cricket lost their cricket ball into a sink hole that led the way to these mysterious and tranquil caves. This was definitely my hidden gem experience of Bermuda! One cave cost $22 and 2 caves $32.

The guided tour was fascinating…I learnt so much and our guide was so passionate and charismatic! We had the opportunity to see the caves in complete darkness, as the 2 young boys would have done on discovering them all them years ago.

Apparently it takes 100 years for the stalactites and stalagmites to develop the size of an ice cube! With the largest formations known as the “Icebergs” taking 1.3 million years to form!

The water within the caves is completely transparent and the depth of the water is deceiving. There are stalactites and stalagmites encompassing the top of the cave and beneath the crystal clear water! The consistency of the water in the caves creates the illusion that the formations under the water are closer than they seem!... truly awe-inspiring!

Apparently the rain that you see dripping in the cave has sometimes fallen 4 months ago! representing “Bermudan time!” A beautiful concept of the laid-back yet charming atmosphere, that you can't help but experience on this beautiful island.

Helpful Hints and Tips~

If you are spending some time in Bermuda, it is definitely worth purchasing the weekly bus ticket, as it works out far more cost effective!

Another li'l insider tip, if you get on the public ferry that takes you around the harbour in Hamilton, it gives you the opportunity to see Bermuda from the ocean and lasts about an hour. It was blissful and definitely a worthwhile experience.

Quotes from the locals~

I had the pleasure of speaking with some friendly local people in Bermuda. Raymond and Carvel were amoungst many. My favourite quote was from Carvel…

“It’s a Bermudaful day!” You don’t get this kind of day in the Bahamas, in Jamaica or anywhere!...only in Bermuda!”
— Carvel ~ Bermuda

For me this quote demonstrates the warm, friendly tone of the Bermudian people and their love for their Island.

Trinket~

My li’l trinket memory from Bermuda was  the story of the mystical moon gates.

As you wander around the Island, through Hamilton, or in the remote areas, you will have the pleasure of seeing these upside down horseshoe shapes along gardens and streets…little gateways made of stone. There is a traditional story behind these moon gates…

The tale goes... Couples on their honeymoon can stand beneath a moon gate, hand in hand, close their eyes and make a wish… as Carvel explained “Not just a little wish, a small wish, but the BIGGEST wish you can think of!” and it will come true!
